THE CROWN PRINCE.

The poppet-heads over the new shaft at the corner of Albert and Pollen-streets were placed in position thin morning;. When up, this work will indeed make Grahamstown look like a mining town, and some of our fellow burgesses will, no doubt, grumble a little when: the engine whistles the shifts on and off, as the case may be. A long, loud, shrill steam whistU, at 12 o'clock at night, is apt to disturb dreams, however pleasant; but the new shaft of the Crown Prince Company is only the advance guard of many a similar ©Me, only closer to the sea and in the more business part of the town. The engine for the Crown Prince will be landed in a fortnight. The tenders for the winding gear are in. To-morrow it will be decided who is the successful tenderer. There is nothing fresh to report from the mine other than that underground operations are being vigorously carried on. The reefs still continue to look well. Sinking is being continued on Nos. 1 and 2 lodes, for the purpose of those reefs being blocked out, when the orons-cut is in from the engine shaft. Crushing; will be resumed on Monday next, it is not decided at which battery. [Our mining reporter seems to forget that we have seen shafts and poppet-heads nearer the sea than the Crown Prince, and that the Grahamstown people have become pretty well accustomed to " shrill steam whistles " by this time."—Ed.]
