The Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. TUESDAY MAY 26, 1874.

The mine managers and mine reporters of Coromandel appear to be at variance* and the former have held a meeting on the subject. It appears to be a storm in a teapot, but there may possibly be some ■ good evolved out of it. Unfortunately for mining both in Coromandel and the Thames, some mine managers, as well as * mining reporters, have .had 'no experience outside those districts. In . the case of the former, if they err through ignorance the immediate shareholders suffer ; if the latter by unreliable reports mislead the public, the evil is more .widespread. However the Coromandel mine managers have come to the conclusion that it will be 'bettor to have their own reports given under a distinct heading —separated from the ordinary productions of mining reporters. With this we concur. Any mining manager giving a report should be responsible for the same, and any mining reporter whose veracity is called in question should be able and willing to substantiate what he has written, and to give his authority if necessary. . "With progressive mines, where matters of fact only are to be recorded, the reports of mine managers should be as sufficient for'the public as for the shareholders, a4d the comments or speculations of mining, reporters, if honestly given, will be - taken by the v public for what they are worth. We may have something more to say on this question in a future issue
