THE CROWN PRINCE.

The manager reports that the winze on No. 1 reef is now down 44 feet, showing a strong' lode of quartz from three to four feet wide, with,a fair show of gold all through the stone, the gold not being confined to either a hanging or foot-wall leader, as is often the case in Thames mines. The winze being sunk on the No. 2reefia now down 50 feet. In" sinking the last 10 feet a perceptible improvement has taken place in the character of the stone, there being a greater, quantity of minerals in ifc than has hitherto been met with, but better stillj these minerals are accompanied by a really good show of gold. Saturday afternoon, and this morning's shift gave 201bs of really good specimens, and about 301bs of picked stuff from the breaking down of about three feet of the lode, a good show of gold still being left at the bottom of the winze. It is the' manager's intention to drive on the No. 3 reef shortly. Sinking the main shaft was commenced on Thursday last, but the gas rose and the men had to beat a retreat. A fan was at once rigged up, and the men went down and recommenced work on Friday. A recurrenceof an accumulation of foul air is anticipated by the erection of the fan. The Crown Prince's new shaft is actually situated almost in the middle of Grahamstown, and its reefs are still running towards the beach. Some of us may live to see poppet-heads and winding engines erected where, in the early days of the. field, a sixty-ton vessel could come up and discharge her cargo. We have already 40 head batteries placed on good solid ground where six years ago there was, at high tide, some nine feet of water.
