Auckland, Friday evening. In the Provincial Council to-day,inreply to Mr Brown, Mr Sheehan stated that Mr Mackay had informed the Government that large private land purchases were being made in the Upper Thames, and were likely to retard settlement. The Superintendent intended to advise the General Government to place the district under the Immigration and Public Works Act, reserving the right to the Government to purchase. The Highways Act was read a second time. The Council is discussing the clauses in committee.
Mr Buckland denies Laving dined with Mr J.S. Macfarlane at Canning's during the Police Court adjournment yesterday. He states he was passing through the room when some one sitting at the table with Mr Macfarlane beckoned him to sit down for a minute or two, but rose and went out alone.
