TIMARU AIRPORT
Unsuitable For Service Planes The Minister of Works (the Hon. R. Semple), replying to the proposal of the Mayor of Timaru, Mr A. E. S. Hanan, that more use might be made of the Timaru Airport, states:— “I have to advise that I have had inquiries made into this matter, and it is agreed that the aerodrome surface is, at the present time, in good condition, this undoubtedly being due to the long spell of dry weather experienced at Timaru. However, it is pointed out that this aerodrome is particularly affected by weather and this factor would have to be taken into account when considering the possibility of an air service.
“Regarding the suggestion that servicemen returning to Timaru should be landed at the aerodrome, the Hon. F. Jones, Minister of Defence, advises me that the types of Service aircraft used for transport work could not operate on the field in question.
“It is possible that a licence could be granted for Union Airways to deliver Christmas mail at the aerodrome and pick up passengers when seating is available, and I suggest that you should make representations to Union Airways in this connection.” Mr Hanan is making inquiries of Union Airways along the lines suggested by the Minister.
