PROGRESS REPORT
Work Of Catchment Board Further progress had been made with surveys and plans for the AshburtonHinds drainage scheme, reported the chief engineer (Mr G. R. Milward) to a meeting of the South Canterbury Catchment Board yesterday. The design and drawings had been made for the reinforced concrete bridge on Shepherd's Bush Road diversion, also for the Laghmor Creek culvert at the Tirnaru track diversion. The survey and plans were completed for the Tirnaru Track and Shepherd’s Bush diversion and the Wheatstone Drain diversion plans were in hand. The survey has been done for four miles of the lower Flemington drain.
On the Hinds river, minor inspections have been made, and the protective work at Oakleys put in hand, continued Mr Milward. Progress had been made with the definition of the outside boundaries of the Orari-Waihi-Temuka control scheme, and a survey made and proposals prepared for dealing with the flooding of the Fairlie township, and an inspection of the Upper Rangitata River was made in connection with river erosion adjoining the Mt. Potts run. The weather had been normal during the period, except for heavy rain on December 3 and 4. especially in the high country. Up to four inches was recorded in some parts, and the Orari again caused consternation by overflowing the souti. bank above the Upper Orari Bridge. The Geraldine County had intended to stopbank this area to protect the highway, but it had been impossible to obtain the necessary plant for the job, concluded Mr Milward. No other serious damage was reported within the Board's district.
