RACING ON AND OFF THE TRACK

Dec. B—Woodville J.C. Dec. B—Waikato R.C. Dec. B—Canterbury J.C. Piccolo is on the market at 3000gns. The Oaks winner, Lady Scholar, cost Mr L. Benge. of Mungaroa only 60gns. at the yearling sales. The Canterbury Cup will be a match between Golden Souvenir and Master Robin. Both will appreciate the softening of the track. Golden Souvenir has been nominated for the Dunedin Cup and the Hazlett Geld Cup. It is doubtful whether he will go to Auckland. An Australian agent recently made a substantial offer for Double Cross without success. W. J. Stevens, who is off to India this week, finished with five wins on two afternoons. Pensacola was allowed to drop out of all races for which he was entered at Riccarton, and no engagements have been made for him at holiday meetings. Real Chase will make his last appearance as a hack on Saturday. His win. on Cup day elevated him to the open class. Regal Praise, who outclassed 1 her opponents in the Rakino Handicap at Ellerslie, was a 1500gn. yearling. She is a sister to Serenata, Russian Ballet and Representative. Tuis and Hormuz went home after the first day at Riccarton, but both are acceptors for Saturday and are expected to return. Tuis will probably be favourite for the Members’ Handicap. Lance Wing. Real Chase. Silver Rod, Lady Chips, Grill and Lord Elgin have been paid up for in two races on the final day of the C.J.C. meeting. The seven furlongs in the Hagley Handicap will suit Centime better than the mile journey on the two earlier days of the meeting, and the Defaulter mare should be in the prize list. Tuis defeated those behind her in the Stewards’ just as convincingly as Irish Note accounted ”or her. An increase of 61b in the Members’ should not worry her if she can manage the extra furlong. The Joker who has been in retirement for about a year, has been entered for the Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap and the Hazlett Gold Cup. An early announcement is expected permitting clubs with two-day meetings to race on Friday and Saturday or Saturday and Monday. The present system is costly to trainers and owners in money as well as time. South Riding, second in the Pupuke Handicap at Ellerslie, was one of the last to leave the straight, and he was forced to go out wide to avoid trouble at the turn. South Riding finished fast to pay a dividend, and he is likely to touch a short quotation In the Waikato Hack Cup.

Soon after Golden Souvenir commenced racing his owner was asked to put a price on Kindergarten’s relative. He put a stop to inquiries by quoting 3000gns. That was a fortunate decision as Golden Souvenir has since won twice three thousand. Prize Ring defeated Lunaria by four lengths in the Middleton Hurdles, but Will meet him on 81b less favourable terms on Saturday. With the sting out of the ground Lunaria may turn the tables if more patiently ridden. On the first day of the Auckland meeting Corsac was backed down to nearly even money. He finished second to Diamond King. On the second day, with Diamond King out of the way in a weaker field, the Foxbridge gelding was allowed to pay nearly three times his earlier price. When Flowerburn scored an easy all-the-way win in the sprint at Ellerslie last Saturday, he was having his first race for more than six months. With a 61b penalty- he will be in much favour at Te Rapa this week. A year ago W. J. Broughton secured a chance winning ride on Miss Medley in the Oaks. This year Broughton was to have been on Lady Scholar, but when he was hurt J. McFarlane was engaged. Broughton recovered in time and took the mount on Swingalong.
