Waimate High School Appointment Made I The appointment of Dr. A. L. M. Perry, of the Christchurch Boys’ High School, to the post of Rector of the Waimate High School, was made at a special meeting of the board of governors on Monday night. There were 49 applications for the vacancy, which was created by the resignation of Mr M. Leadbetter, consequent upon his appointment to the rectorship of the Southland Boys’ High School at Invfrcargill. Dr. Perry, who will commence duty on February 2, 1946, is 39. He is at present senior French master, Careers and Vocational Guidance, master at the Christchurch Boys’ High School, and lecturer in French at Canterbury University College. In the course of

his studies he has travelled in France, Germany, Denmark, Finland, Poland, Holland,' Belgium, the British Isles and the United States of America. In 1938 the degree of Doctor of Philosophy was awarded by the University of London for a thesis, “An investigation of recent tendencies in secondary education in England and America and their implications for the reorganisation of secondary education in New Zealand.” Di‘. Perry is interested in all forms of sport, repertory, debating and music. He is an experienced public speaker and has given a number of talks over the air. Dr. Perry has had considerable experience on the business and organising side of secondary school activities. He was rejected for military service overseas on account of eyesight, but served with commissioned rank in the Third Division of the New Zealand Military Forces until'he was demobilised. Dr. and Mrs Perry are at present staying in Waimate. They will attend the High School prize-giving ceremony this week. Magistrate’s Court A charge of committing mischief by wilfully damaging a suit of clothes to the value of £B/10/- was preferred against Trevor James Albert Ainge, who appeared before Mr G. G. Chisholm, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Ainge, who had already made good the amount of the damage, was fined £3. On a charge of being found on licensed premises after hours, James Martin Hughes, who did not appear, was fined £l, costs 10/-. For failure to possess a warrant of fitness, George Tobias Deam was fined 10/-, costs 12/-, and Alexander Edward Lane was fined 10/-, costs 10/-, in respect of a car and 5/-, costs 10/- in respect of a trailer. For having no driver’s licence, John Joseph O'Connor was fined £l, costs 12/-. Michael Joseph Young, Kenneth Macfarlane and Archibald William Hurst were each fined £l. costs 10/-. Hurst was fined a further 10/-, costs 10/-. for failure to possess a warrant of fitness. An order was made in favour of the Waimate County Council for possession of a tenement to be given up by Mrs A. Moore before January 15. Judgment was given for plaintiff by default in R. H. Kaan v. Neill Cairns, claim £l3/7/4. Meehans Stores proceeded on a judgment summons against H. H. Wilson for the recovery of £9/17/3. An order was made for payment of the amount forthwith, with costs, in default 10 days’ imprisonment. Personal Mr H. W. Gallagher commenced duty as postmaster at Waimate yesterday. Mr Gallagher was formerly postmaster at Eketahuna. Messrs C. D. Provan and D. Ryder have commenced duty at the Waimate Post Office. Mr R. Hardie, of the Waimate Post and Telegraph Office, will leave to-day on transfer to Wellington. Mr J L. W. Gerken is relieving Clerk of the Court at Waimate during the absence of Mr D. M. Webster on leave. Mr J. Nolan, postmaster at the High Street Post Office, Christchurch, has been visiting Waimate. He returned to Christchurch yesterday.
