SWIMMING SOUTH END CLUB
More Coaches Desired Due to the war the South End Swimming Club ceased activities for two years and revived last December by the South End Ratepayers and Householders’ Association, reported the president (Mr F. J. Heise) in his annual report. After a postponement due to bad weather, the opening day was held on January 10 in good weather and in the presence of a good attendance of the public. The club’s evenings for coaching and competitions were well patronised. The large number of learners emphasised the need for more coaches. After the first two weeks Mr H. Cornwell reported that of the 14 learners, 12 could swim a width of the baths. There were also 30 junior, 20 intermediate und nine senior swimmers. With the co-operation of other swimming clubs, and the help of the Physical Welfare Department, it was hoped that sufficient instructors would be available to coach learners. The carnival in February was a great success in spite of inclement weather. There were many exciting finishes, many races being won by a touch. Relative to Century Baths, the president said that the club should approach the Council with a view to having a new high diving board erected and the surface around the baths levelled so as to eliminate pools of water. Tepid baths were a necessity in Timaru and it was hoped that the project would materialise in the near future. With cold weather extending into early summer there was need for tepid baths to enable much longer periods of training for competitors. The president concluded by thanking all who had in any way assisted the club during the season. Softball The South Canterbury Women’s Softball Association will begin the first round of the junior competition for the Hanan Cup to-day. The Kiwi seniors will not participate. This will give the four new clubs an even chance, as all players are new to the game. The Kiwi Club will prepare their players for the New Zealand championships. A selection committee has been elected to choose the team and arrangements will be made at an early date for special tuition. The men’s teams will continue to plav friendly matches until after the New Year, when it is hoped an extra team will be formed. Hints to players:—How to play catcher: Take up your position directly behind the batter, in line with the home plate. Place left foot in front of the right, holding up hand with catcher’s mit at hip level of batter thus acting as a guide for the pitcher to pitch to. Wear a mask as set down in the rules. Women wear a padded chest protector at well. Be accurate in your throwing and able to take catches from all angles Watch the runners on all bases and keep an eye on the fielding positions of your team
