SOVIET OPPOSITION
Temporary Trusteeship Committee (7.30 n.m.) LONDON. Nov. 29. The question of appointing a temporary trusteeship committee for territories came before Committee No. 4 of the Preparatory Commission of the United Nations' Organisation to-day. M. Gromyko <Russia) objected on the ground that the United Nations at present did not hold any territories under trusteeship, and therefore there was nothing for the suggested committee to do. Moreover, the Charter of the United Nations did not provide for the establishment of any temporary organ of trusteeship. Tlie delegations of the United Kingdom. South Africa and the United States supported the recommendation, which was made by the executive committee of the commission urging that the temporary committee would bridge the gap until the Trusteeship Council could be formed. The Australian delegation said the Charter allowed for the formation of subsidiary organs necessary to expedite any work, and the committee would be such an organ. Tile committee adjourned to allow the objecting delegations to prepare recommends'ions for the next meeting.
