APPROACH TO BAY
Harbour Board Replies To Council Maintenance Responsibility A cuestion of ownership and maintenance of the land containing the southern approach to Caroline Bay from Strathallan Street was put to the meeting of the Timaru Harbour Beard yesterday, in a letter received from the Timaru Borough Council. It was decided to refer the Council to an agreement made in April, 1929, and suggest, that in view of the coming holidays, to improve the access and roadway to the Bay; also to ask the Council to seal the street from the railway crossing in Strathallan Street from the New Zealand Railways boundary to tlie tar-sealed portion outside of the Board's office as agreed to in the letter from the Council m July, 1937.
It was thought by the public that when they had negotiated the Strathallan Street crossing they were clear of danger, said the chairman (Mr R. S. Goodman), but that was not the case. There were three sets of lines to be crossed further on. The roads that were there were for the benefit of shipping, but all roads on the property of the Board were under the control of the Council. “We gave the Council our reserve near the quarry to rid us of a liability.” said Mr W. Lindsay, but he had noticed in a statement that it had cost the Board £34 to remove gorse from there. Mr P. Kidd: If there is an agreement between the Council and the Board why has the Council asked about the question of maintenance?
