ELECTORAL BILL
Governor-General Asked To Intervene
(N.Z.P.A.) WELLINGTON, Nov. 1. The Dominion executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union has sent a conur. unication to the Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall, requesting him to intervene in the Government’s decision to proceed with passage of the Electoral Amendment Bill. The Farmers’ Union, in a letter to his Excellency forwarded late to-day, has asked him to take up the matter of abolition of the country quota with the Government by requesting its reconsideration of the legislation. The Farmers’ Union also, it is understood, requested his Excellency to dissolve Parliament with a view to an early General Election as a test of public opinion on the Government’s action in proposing to abolish the country quota. The decision to approach the Governor-General was reached by the Farmers’ Union after receipt of the Prime Minister’s reply, refusing on behalf of the Government to withdraw the Bill. In view of the Government’s attitude the full conference of the Farmers’ Union has been urgently reconvened and will assemble in the Kailway Social Hall, Wellington, at 10 o’clock to-morrow morning. The Dominion president, Mr W. W. Mulholland, will preside and delegates are expected to be present from all parts of the country.
