NEWSPRINT IMPORTS
Restrictions Maintained LONDON, October 12. A director of the Newsprint Supply Company (Sir Walter Layton) issued a statement that the company recently received notice from the Government that, owing to the exchange situation, the preparations in hand for increasing the size of newspapers (at present four pages for penny dailies) must be indefinitely postponed. The Government’s ruling would restrict the imports of newsprint and/or of pulp in 1946 to the quantity required for the present wartime sizes of newspapers. The importation of newsprint from Canada and Newfoundland would be limited in 1946 to 50,000 tons, instead of the 224,000 tons contracted for—the remainder being postponed to a future period.
