CANTEEN BOARD
Reply To Criticism
(N.Z.P.A.) WELLINGTON. Oct. 13. Answering criticism of the Canteen Board’s action in charging admission for the entertainment of repatriated prisoners of war at the Raventhorpe convalescent camp, the secretary of the Board (Mr J. H. Seater) said: “No request was received from any responsible authority for the continuance of the free entertainment which was provided on the first night repatriated prisoners were in the camp at Raventhorpe. Had such a request been received this concession would have been granted, as was done at Papakura after a request from the camp commandant. Unless special representations are made the Canteen Board’s staff cannot fairly be expected to anticipate circumstances which would entitle various transit personnel passing through Raventhorpe to such concessions. In view of the circumstances and the favourable manner in which the Canteen Board has met requests made by the Returned Services’ Association. it is regrettable that the Auckland president has seen fit to express himself in this manner.”
