WAIPOPO HUTS

Sir.—Seeing that the Government has so far not solved the housing problem, one would think that the residences at Waipopo would be worth a little protection. It would be quite possible to house temporarily many returned men and convey them to work by bus or car to Timaru. All of these huts are in good condition and compare more than favourably with many of the “dumps” people are asked to live in in Timaru. All contain modern conveniences and the congenial atmosphere would no doubt appeal to a returned man and family badly in need of an economical nest. As for the web-feet and getting heads read that is all that can be expected from “Bulldozer Bob.” If the Levels irrigation scheme is a sample of irrigation, and having seen the results at Seadown, I venture to say that when the Rangitata scheme is turned loose the people in lower parts of that district will not only need web-feet but will need to grow fins as well. Knowing well that the removal of bush forests is one of the major causes of flooding, it may be worth the Government's while to do what has been done in other parts of the world with success, namely to ordain a by-law that when trees are being removed It is compulsory to plant a given number in their place and also wherever possible to plant more pinus insignis plantations. In years to come the result will be seen to advantage. —I am, etc., Mud Lark.
