RACING ON AND OFF THE TRACK

First race at Dunedin at 11.0. First totalisator race at Addington at 11.30.

Sunny Nelson is one of the problem horses of the moment. He has the ability to win races, but not the will to begin smartly. Knave of Diamonds is one of the horses requiring one win to put them into the Trotting Cup. He is in the big race at the New Brighton meeting, but is set a big task to concede 60 yards. L. J. Ellis is not likely to ride at the Dunedin meeting, and is not certain that he will be fit to take mounts at Washdyke. Weld Cona was given 7.9 for his first appearance in the open ranks, in the Ranfurly Handicap at Dunedin, but this is likely to be reduced to 7.2 by an apprentice allowance. Sea Rover, one of Set Sail’s progeny, was among the most promising hacks in Southland last season. He is to resume racing in the Clarendon Handicap at Wingatui. Whackie turned on an attractive gallop at Wingatui during the week. The track should suit him, but he is inclined to be fractious at the barrier. Transport in Australia is in the melting pot, and there seems to be a possibility that First In will be the only New Zealand horse able to run in the two Cups. Immediate, High Play. Royal Flight and Typhoon may be home sooner than was anticipated.

After calling "Go!” and later “Come back!” at the start of the Camellia Stakes (won by Immediate) at Rosehill the starter pursued the horses in a car. and when they had pulled up ordered them straight back to the barrier. The stewards overruled the official and fixed the re-run to take place after the last race.

It is probable that a siren will be installed at Washdyke to warn the public when a protest or inquiry holds up payment of dividends. Insufficient use is generally made of the broadcasting apparatus to give this service, and at more than one meeting lately investors have claimed that they destroyed tickets in ignorance. Scott Axworthy is the form horse for the President’s Handicap at New Brighton, but he requires a good deal of leg room and too often gets shut in. Dundee Sandy is another entitled to support, though he may now have reached a mark which will pull him up. Nightbeam should have improved as a result of his race last month, and these three may be the favourites. The owner of the Derby winner, Dante (who side-stepped the St. Leger) has started something new in stud management. Forty owners have paid £3OOO each (a total of £120.000) for the right to nominate one mare a year. The owner of Dante (Sir E. Ohlsen) appears to have all the best of the deal. Dante might die in a year or two, and in three or four years he might have proved to be a failure as a sire.

Ajax, starting at 40 to 1 on—backers being required to stake £2 to win a shilling—at Rosehill some years ago, was beaten in a three-horse race. In the Rosehill Guineas when Ajax’s son Magnificent was beaten, the bookmakers called 12 to 1 bar one. Prior to the race, Magnificent was awarded a “beauty” prize for the best horse in the field, conformation and soundness being taken into consideration. Trots at New Brighton The New Brighton Trotting Club's spring meeting is to be held at Addington to-day. Big fields of medium class pacers and trotters are carded, and betting should be well spread. Horses with a form backing include.—• Introductory Handicap: Royal Dale, Quartermaster, Mamanuas. Improvers’ Handicap: Chinook, Sunny Nelson, Barometer Chimes. Spring Handicap: Cameronian, Lucky Loyal, Imperial Lady. President's Handicap: Scott Axworthy, Nightbeam Dundee Sandy. Stewards’ Handicap: Fantom, Sea Gem, Mae Wynne. Avon Handicap: Gamble King, Plunder Bar, Gamester. Members’ Handicap: Slavonic, Emulous. Water Ranger. Farewell Handicap: Knave of Diamonds, Scott Axworthy, Integrity. RICCARTON NOTES

(Special) CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 5. A cold southerly wind, which set in last night, was followed by rain and there were more heavy showers this morning. With many of the trainers absent at Wingatui. there were only a few horses on the tracks at Riccarton and the work was negligible. Irish Note who has been off the scene since January, has done very well since he resumed work. It is probable that he will have a race at Washdyke next week, while he also has a sprint engagement later in the month at Trentham. He had his only win last season at Awapuni. but he showed good form on other occasions, including two smart efforts at Riccarton, where he was third in the Stewards’ Handicap and fourth in the Members’ Handicap. Vafort has made good progress in his work since M. J. Wadley brought him back from a spell and he may be included in the Riccarton nominations for the New Zealand Cup. He showed promise of staying last season, when he was a double winner in mile hack races at Trentham in January. Airother trip north is in view this month, as a start for this season’s racing. G. Ridgway will have Dash o’ Dink at Otaki to-morrow. He is a useful hack who has raced consistently of late, without much luck, and a six furlong race should suit him.

The two-year-old gelding by Ninth Duke from Roman Mascot in F. Christmas’s stable is spelling for a few months. He will be a big horse when he has finished growing and he may not be raced this season. FULL RESTORATION Racing And Trotting Permits (N.Z.P.A.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 5. The full restoration of permits both for trotting and racing has now been granted by the Government. Announcing this the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry, said that the position had been kept under review since the cessation of hostilities, and circumstances now allowed full restoration. He emphasised that it *was still necessary to limit racing permits to Saturdays and statutory holidays. The full number of permits for both racing and trotting is 320. During the war a 50 per cent cut operated, leaving 160 permits, but the recent relaxation announced by Mr Parry brought the total to 220. The relaxation announced to-day will make available another 100 permits.

DUNEDIN J.C.

TO-DAY’S PROSPECTS (Special) DUNEDIN, Oct. 5. The Dunedin Jockey Club's spring fixture has all the elements of success if the weather remains favourable. Further showers are predicted and the track may be slightly soft. Psalm is expected to start favourite for the Guineas, and southerners will support Special Flight in the McLean Stakes, but some of the Riccarton youngsters are expected to run well. The following may be prominent: Wakari Hurdles: Lunaria, Sandy Cape, Forage. Novice Handicap: Rubble, Burnbrae, Lexia. Kaikorai Handicap: Milton Abbas, Hansel, Grill. Ranfurly Handicap: Weld Cona, Sphere, Authentic. Dunedin Guineas: Psalm, Swingalong, Nightstalk. McLean Stakes: Special Flight, Lakhnau, Lady Fane. Telegraph Handicap: Lord Advocate. Grand Forest, Whackie. Clarendon Handicap: Gold Lance, Sea Power, Sir Bernard,
