PRISONERS GRANTED CLEMENCY

Marking Surrender (7.30 p.m.) CANBERRA. Oct. 5.

To mark the formal surrender of Japan, the Governor-General, the Duke of Gloucester, has granted clemency towards offenders against the laws of the Commonwealth and its territories.

The Prime Minister (Mi J B. Chifleyt announced in the House of Representatives to-day that for mendjers of the forces the remission will be 14 days in their sentences up to 56 days. For sentences in excess of three months the remission is at the rate of 14 days for each period of three months. For civilians the remission will be on the basis of approximately cne seventh of the sentences of three months or more.
