N.Z. GRAVES ON CRETE

Commemorative Ceremony (Rec. 9.30 pan.) ATHENS. Oct. 3. Lieutenant-General Sir Bernard Freyberg arrived at Piraeus aboard the cruiser H.M.S. Ajax after attending commemorative ceremonies at Canea in memory of the New Zealanders killed in defending Crete in 1941. A delegation of 100 New Zealand officers and other ranks accompanied the General to Crete. After the memorial service at the cemetery Sir Bernard r»ad a telegraph message from the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser to Admiral Voulgaris (Greek Premier) stating: "We are deeply conscious of New Zealand's debt to .the Greek nation for their gallantry’ and selfsacrifice in sheltering many of our men. We shall never forget all you personally and those associated with you have’ done for our men.” Sir Bernard Freyberg then handed over the cemetery to the Cretans The Governor of Crete said that the graves would be kept with reverence. The fredom of the city of Canea was later bestowed on Sir Bernard Freyberg.
