TRIAL AS WAR CRIMINAL

Luzon Commander TOKIO. October 3. General MacArthur announced that Lieutenant-General Yamashiia, commander of the Japanese forces on Luzon, will be tried immediately in Manila by the United States Military Commission as a war criminal. The Commission will be composed of Major-General Russell Reynolds, president, two other maior-generals, and two brigadier-generals. The public will be admitted to the trial. Yamashita will be nermitted to choose his own counsel if he wishes. The charge is that between October 9, 1944, when he assumed command of the Philippines and September 2, 1945. at Manila and other nlaces in the Philippines, he failed in his duty as commander to control the operations of members of his command, permitting them to commit brutal atrocities and other high crimes against the peoples of the United States, its Allies and dependencies, particularly the Philippines, and he thereby violated the laws of war. The Philippines Government has filed 21 charges of treason against Teofilo Sison, a member of the Philippines Punpet Government. Solicitor-General Tanada said that charges would be ouickly filed against other members of the Puppet Cabinet. Manila headuarters announced that Lieut.-General Homma, Commander of the Philippines during the death march on Bataan, will be tried as a war criminal shortly after Yamashita. Calm in Bombay Complete calm has been restored in Bombay. Trams and buses are working normally. Baseball Series Chicago Cubs defeated Tigers 9-0 in the first game of the world baseball series, states a Detroit message.
