MILK SUPPLY

Contracts Under Penalty Most suppliers to the South Canterbury Co-operative Milk Supply’ Company have signed contracts to supply a specific quantity of milk daily under penalty to ensure an adequate winter supply for Timaru, said the secretary of the Company (Mr A. A. Solomon) yesterday. The requirements of Timaru consumers was 2100 gallons a day, of which amount the company was contracting to deliver 1900 gallons, said Mr Solomon. At present there was a surplus, and the requirements of all schools were being fully met.. The Minister as yet had given no indication when the restriction on the sale of cream would be lifted. When the director of the Milk Marketing Division (Mr H. H. Innes) was in Timaru recently, he said there would be a further increase in the guaranteed price of milk this year to bring producers into line with the rest of the dairy industry. He had agreed to recommend to the Minister that the guaranteed price at the farm gate to milk producers should average 14.85 d a gallon this year. The guaranteed price would not be paid to producers or producer-vendors who were not members of the locai co-operative company. Asked to comment on the Minister’s statement that the zoning of all commodities with the exception of milk would no longer operate, Mr T. H. Dunn, a member of the Plant Owners’ Association, said that the position was being carefully watched, and strong representations were being made to the Government to allow plant owners the same measure of free trade as the others.
