PAPER BALLOONS

Launched Against America a TOK IO Oct. 2. Japanese army technical officers revealed that 9000 paper balloons were launched against America from three sites near Tokio before the experiment was. abandoned last April. The balloon bombardment resulted from the anger of militarists and surprise over General James Doolittle's bombing of Tokio. The first satisfactory balloon could not be made until 16 years after the experiments began. Japanese intelligence could only ascertain that one balloon landed in America, but after the war ended it was revealed that 209 balloons landed. Bombardment was abandoned because it was decided that the results were worthless. The main purpose was to start forest fires and cause great confusion in America.
