Josef Kramer, the nrincinal accused in the trial of SS guards, said this in a long statement read to the court at Lunehurg to-day. Kramer denied that any prisoner ever complained to him about ill-treat-ment. He added that when he arrived at Belsen in November, 1944. there f 1.) f>"i) prisoner '[;i ■ immber had iiento 20 000 by F( bruaiy 1945. •‘From February onwards I am unable to say how many t had, as no books were kept." he claimed. “This wis utterly impossible in view of transports streaming in from Silesian camps which were being evacuated. It was absolutely impossible for me to procure enough bread to feed the number of prisoners I had.” Kramer, serious-faced, bent over the Corman translation while the English ven ion of. the statement was read. He :i: ked his chin reflectively and took copious notes.
