CONTEMPT OF COURT
CoTnnrer* By Magistrate (N.Z.P.A.) WELLINGTON Oct. 3. What was described as astounding contempt of court occurred in the Magistrate’s Court shortly before the opening of an important series of rationing and Price Tribunal prosecutions. The Magistrate who was to preside. Mr T. E. Maunseil. said: "I received the most extraordinary telephone call 10 minutes ago from an unknown communicant to tell me that the defendant was an intimate friend of certain Cabinet Ministers who would be in a position to do me a good turn if I treat,ed him leniently. “It was a most astounding contempt of Court,’’ said Mr Maunseil. “Unfortunately he would not tell me who he was. 1 nienl/on the matter because I think it should have some publicity.” Mr 11. F. O’Leary. K.C.. appearing for the defendant, said the announcement came as a complete surprise to him and his client. The Magistrate accepted Mr O’Leary's assurance, adding: “I can say no more than that it was an Irish voice. I do not know what country he comes from, but it is net done here.” The hearing then proceeded. Mr O’Leary called Newland and asked him what he knew of lhe telephone call referred lo bv th? Magistrate. • I have no idea whatever about it.” lie replied. -As to having been pally with Cabinet Ministers; well. I do a bit of racing and several of them go along. I myself have had several anonymous telephone (alls, particularly at niehl. and I want, to dissociate myself entirely from this call.” Mr Maun e 1- "I unreservedly accept v our statement.”
