PINUS INSIGNIS
Probable Use For Building The use of pinus insignts for building houses might be the answer to the present timber shortage, but before that can be done it will have to be treated to make it more durable and less susceptible to weather conditions, said a Timaru builder when commenting on a report that pinus was being used for the building of State houses in the North Island. Some houses recently built in Timaru had the inside walls finished with a board made from pinus insignis wood pulp. It was a good insulator against coal and heat, but its tendency to expand and contract with changes of temperature necessitated a special technique in making the joins. Recently, said the builder, a demonstration had been given in Timaru by an expert showing how a good finish could be made with the board, at the same time making allowance for the swelling of the wood. Pinus for building houses had never been given an exhaustive trial, and perhaps it could be treated effectively and economically for the job. If that were possible it would be a boon to the country
