Recognition Demanded Trades Union Rally By Telegraph—N.Z. Press Assn Copyrigin SYDNEY, Oct. 1. A public meeting organised by the New South Wales Trades and Labour Council in Sydney yesterday demanded that “the Indonesian Provisional Republic be recognised by the United Nations, and that the Japanese and Dutch rulers be withdrawn.” In Melbourne 1200 trade unionists and Indonesians passed a resolution asking the Commonwealth to demand the withdrawal of British forces from Java immediately the Japanese have been disarmed and interned. One Indonesian speaker at the Sydney meeting said “the era of Dutch exploitation” of the East Indies had ended. He added that the Indonesians were not going to return to a day’s working for Id a day. Another speaker said the Indonesians
admire the waterside workers of Australia, New Zealand and the United States Pacific Coast for the support they are giving the Indonesians. The Federal Secretary of the Waterside Workers’ Federation, Mr H. Healy, stated that the destination of all cargo for Dutch ships was now being checked in Australia in furtherance of the policy of the Australian waterside workers not to work ships bound for the Netherlands Indies. “We are not loading Dutch vessels that are carrying supplies of food or equipment to be used against the Indonesian Republic. Food is being checked to prevent it going to the armies of intervention, and close scrutiny is being made of other consignments.”
