SINCERE TRIBUTES
Two Public Servants 'Retire (N.Z.P.A.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 1. The Prime Minister and his Ministerial colleagues and representatives of other Government Departments this morning officially bid farewell to Mr C. A. Jeffery, who until Saturday was permanent head of the Prime Minister’s Department, and who has retired after 42 years’ service with the Public Service Department. Many handsome and sincere tributes were paid to Mr Jeffery, who was presented with a wallet by Mr Fraser on behalf of the .staff of the Prime Minister’s Department. Mr Jeffery has been chief private secretary to successive Prime Ministers since 1922. The resignation of Mr J. T. Paul, Director of Publicity, was announced to-day by the Prime Minister. “Few men associated with New Zealand’s war effort, within the Dominion had a more onerous task than that carried out with Mr Paul's marked ability,” said Mr Fraser. Mr Paul was appointed to the position two days before war was declared. “The Government and country were greatly indebted to him and his staff for the faithful service rendered in an important part of the war service,” concluded Mr Fraser.
