ROAD HAZARDS

Auckland Leads Dominion (N.Z.P.A.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 27. “We might as well be frank about things. Ido not think there is any adequate traffic control in Auckland,” said Mr G. L. Laurenson, chairman of the New Zealand Road Safety Council, pointing out that one-third of the deaths of pedestrians in road accidents occurred in the Auckland metropolitan area. The figures showed that the area, comprising 10 local authorities, contained 11 per cent of New Zealand' -, population and 12 per cent of its motor registrations. There were 493 accidents in 1944 Involving personal injury in this area out of a Dominion total of 2097. There were 29 fatal accidents out of a total of 134. and 213 pedestrians were knocked down by motors.

When a member remarked that Auckland motorists behaved better in regard to pedestrian crossings than Wellington drivers, Mr Laurenson said: “All we know is that they kill a third of the pedestrians in New Zealand. They should not do that.” The Council decided to take the matter tip with the Auckland authorities.
