TIMOR REVERTS TO PORTUGAL
“Arranged” By Japan
MANILA, August 17. In compliance with a request by the Portuguese Government, Japan has arranged to return Portuguese Timor to Portugal, states a Domei News Agency report in a broadcast by the Tokio radio. Appropriate instructions have already been issued to the Japanese authorities on Timor. Japan occupied Portuguese Timor in self-defence, added the radio. The Lisbon radio says that Japanese forces on Timor have given themselves up to the Governor. The Prime Minister of Portugal (Dr. Antonio Salazar), in a speech at Lisbon declared that Portugal was preparing to fight Japan, but the Japanese surrender came too soon. He added that Portugal signed a treaty with the Allies to join in the war in the Far East to recover Portuguese Timor as soon as sufficient equipment was provided.
