TABLE TENNIS NOTES

This week's matches completed the first round of the men's competitions. 11l the A grade Sports Centre maintained their unbeaten record by defeating Public Trust. Crispians with six w'ins are only one point behind followed by Public Trust five. Social Security three, St. Patrick’s three. Post Office two. Junior Chamber of Commerce two, and Banks 0. In the B grade Railway A lead, with seven wins, followed by Council five, Chalmers four, Timaru 2 four, Tifnaru 1. three, Railway B, three, St. Patrick's two.

The women’s competition was upset this week by the premature announcement of the cessation of hostilities on Monday. In the only game played Public Trust beat Railway. The remaining games in this draw will be played by arrangement between the various teams.

E. Earwaker (Public Trust) has shown steady improvement during the season and he put up an excellent fight against S. A. Brentford (Sports Centre). Earwaker endeavoured to keep Bremford on the move and with a little more accuracy in his shots these tactics might have succeeded. Bremford won 21-18. 21-19. the score being a good indication of the game.

The Social Security team this week included P. Duming. While serving with the Air Force Durning’s opportunities for play have been limited but he possesses good strokes on both backhand and forehand and h’s game will quickly improve with practice. Next week’s games are as follows: Women: National Mortgage v. Timaru B at Timaru: St. Patrick's v. P'\st Office at St. Patrick's; Timaru A v. Railway at Timaru: Combined Banks B v. Council at Council. The match between Combined Banks A and Public Trust has already been played. Men's A: —Sports Centre v. Junior Chamber of Commerce at Spoils Centre; Crispians v. St. Patrick's at Crispians; Combined Banks v. Post Office at Post. Office: Public Trust v. Social Security at Public Trust. Men's B: St. Patrick’s v. Timaru 1 at St. Patrick’s: Chalmers v. Timaru 2 at Timaru; Railway B v. Council at Council; Railway A a bye. Representative Basketball

A South Canterbury Representative team will take part in the Dominion Tournament, second grade. For several years South Canterbury won this grade and was entitled to play first grade, but. as this is the first tournament South Canterbury has plaved in since 1939 it was decided to’ enter second grade.
