Breaches Of Gaming Act (N ZP A ) WELLINGTON, Aug. 13. A total of £lO5O in nine minutes, or more than £lOO a minute, was imposed in fines In the Magistrate's Court today by Mr J- L. Stout. S.M., on 11 persons who appeared on charges under the Gaming Act. Of seven of them charged with conducting the business of a'’bookmaker on Sat urday six were fined £lOO each and the other £250. The remaining four accused were fined £5O each for permitting their premises to be used as common gaming houses. Detective-Sergeant E. H. Compton, who stated that he and DetectiveSergeant G. E. Callaghan conducted all the raids on Saturday, said, when prosecuting persons charged with permitting their premises to be used as common earning houses “there is one observation I woHld like to make. If bookmakers could not get a telephone they could not carrv on their business.”
