Fertilisation of Clover
A talk was given by Mr G E. Gumbrell who explained the action of honey bees in the fertilisation of clover. He intimated that a more competent authority on the subject would address members at a later date. It was decided to accept a challenge from the Young Farmers’ Club to a debate, and Messrs Barnett, Slater and Gumbrell were appointed to represent the Union. The subject of the debate will be, “That large farms are more profitable than small farms.” The Union will take the negative side. It was resolved to forward the following remit to the South Canterbury Executive:— “That a vigorous protest be entered against the cancellation of licences for four gallons and under of petrol. “That it be a recommendation to the executive that steps be taken to endeavour to interest young men in the blacksmithing and harness trades." The danger of stock straying at night, in various parts of the country, particularly in the Hilton and Kakahu areas, was discussed at a meeting of the Geraldine County Council. Councillors said it appeared that some farmers were deliberately turning their stock on to the roads at night, and it was agreed to prosecute when such cases were found.
