CAR LIGHTS
Regulations To Be Enforced The Commissioner of Transport. Mr G. L. Laurenson. again draws the attention of motorists to the necessity of having properly adjusted headlights when driving at night. . , In spite of previous warnings tnat have been given the Transport Department is receiving frequent complaints of dazzling headlights. Strong representations on the subject have been made by the motorists’ own organisations and both the North and Soutn Island Motor Unions have asked tnat action be taken against offenders. “In view of the increase in night travelling that is likely as a result of the more generous petrol ration, said the Commissioner. “I am taking immediate steps to strengthen the enforcement of the regulations covering the adjustment of headlights. Departmental traffic inspectors have been instructed to make a check of vehicles travelling at night, and in cases where the lights appear to dazzle to test the headlight adjustment on the spot. Traffic offence notices will be issued where the lights are not in accordance with the regulations and these cases will be reported to me with a view to prosecution of the offending owner “The importance ot eliminating dazzle at night cannot be overstated, declared Mr Laurenson. The risk of accident, particularly to pedestrians and cyclists, is increased by the car owner‘who neglects to keep his lights m adjustment or who neglects to dip them when pproaching other vehicles at ffieht The comparatively few drivers who persist in offending in this respect after* the revealed warnings already given will be prosecuted.
