Obituary Mr John Meager, whose death occurred in Waimate recently, was born at Penzance. Cornwall, m 1868, and arrived in New Zealand in 1874 in the sailing ship Waimate. His parents came to Timaru. later moving to Otaio. which was then the terminus of the railway in Canterbury. Mr Meager had his early education at Otaio before the school was built. His parents made several moves, first to Lauriston. then to Cave, Studholme Junction. Waihao Downs and finally Morven. Mr Meager, who was employed by Mr Mitchell at “Kenwyn," joined Court Foresters’ Pride, Waimate. nearly half a century ago, and transferred to Court star of Waihao on the inception of that Lodge at Morven in January, 1904, remaining a member until his death. The funeral was largely attended by many early settlers from various parts of South Canterbury. The services at the house and the graveside were conducted by Captain Lamond. of the Salvation Army. P.C.R. Bro. J. T. Mills read the Foresters’ service. Waituna Institute Members of the Waituna Women’s Institute were privileged at their monthly meeting to hear a very interesting talk given by Miss J. Studholme, who returned recently after service as a V.A. in the Middle East. Miss Studholme spoke of her work in No. 1 General Hospital in Egypt and afterwards in Italy, and told of her travels while on leave. In thanking Miss Studholme. Mrs Grant expressed the appreciation of members for her enjoyable talk.

Mrs F. J. Bailey presided at the meeting. There was a fair attendance of members. An invitation was received to the birthday party of the Glenavy Institute. Dominion Headquarters wrote about the proposal for amalgamation with the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. Members decided that they were not in favour of amalgamation. A sum was voted for the purchase of foodstuffs for tbr; people of Great Britain. As a result. 22 tins of food and six packets of jelly crystals were handed in to the Borough Council office in response to the appeal made by the Mayoress (Mrs W. F. Boland). Mrs M. J. Friel, in a Golden Thread talk, dealt with homes, and told bow to alter scullery and pantry, making them into one. Competitions resulted:—Small bloom. Mrs J. Wallace 1. Mrs W. Ross 2; large bloom.
