“THE PINES’’ BLOCK

Sir.—The proposed purchase by the Timaru Borough Council of "The Pines” will be of interest to more than a few ratepayers. Some short time ago this property was offered for sale by the Education Department and could not raise a bid of £lOOO for the lot. Later, I believe, it was acquired by the present owner at that figure. Nothing very expensive in the way of improvement has been done, yet we now find that the same property is thought to be worth £2500 of ratepayers’ money. The vendor is to be congratulated on his good deal. But what are we to think of the business ability of the Council members. And will the Land Sales Committee allow a property to jump in value nearly 150 per cent in these stabilised times? My opinion is that the people who have to find the cash are entitled to a little more information on this deal. —I am, etc., RATEPAYER.
