HIGH TRIBUTES BY STAFF

Presentation To Town Clerk “Capable Officer And Good Friend” High tributes to the qualities of Mr E. A. S. Killick, who retired from tile position of Town Clerk of the Borough of Timaru yesterday, were paid by members of the staff when they gathered at the Council Chambers yesterday afternoon to make a presentation to him. "We are not only losing a capable officer but also a good friend,” said Mr S. Mauger. All members of the staff wished to thank Mr Killick for the ready assistance he had always given them and to express their appreciation of his friendship. All would wish Mr Killick many happy years in retirement.

“This is a sad occasion for all of us,” said the borough engineer (Mr R. J. Comrie). “We realise the efforts Mr Killick has made for our benefit, and we thank him sincerely. The staff has always been ready to assist Mr Killick for he has been a friend to ail.” Recalling the help Mr Killick had given him on his appointment as borough electrical engineer, Mr R. D. Veitch said that the staff would always remember Mr Killick’s genial personality, assistance and advice. “It has been said, and I agree, that we may have many town clerks but never another Mr Killick,” said Miss A. K. Elliot (borough librarian). All speakers wished Mr Killick and his wife a long and happy retirement. Miss Elliot, on behalf of the staff, presented Mr Killick with a travelling rug. “Because of the co-operation and good Will which has existed among all of the staff we have got things done,” replied Mr Killick. “I am grateful to the staff for the kindness and consideration they have at all times shown to me.”

Mr Killick welcomed the new Town Clerk (Mr J. M. Jenkins). As chairman of the Council’s finance committee, Mr Jenkins had proved a good friend of the staff, added Mr Killick. He was confident that Mr Jenkins would remain a good friend. “I look to the future with some trepidation because of the high standard set by Mr Killick,” said Mr Jenkins. “It Will be my hope that when my time comes to retire the staff will have as good a word for me as they have today for Mr Killick.”
