TEMUKA RATE INCREASE PROPOSED

Estimates Considered By Council Recommendation To Next Meeting If the recommendations carried at a special meeting of the Temuka Borough Council, held on Wednesday evening, to consider the estimates for the next financial year are adopted at the next monthly meeting, there will be an increase in the rates levied by the Borough Council amounting to 5-16 of a penny in the £ capital value. The increase suggested is a separate rate of id in the £ to meet the increased Harbour Board levy of .Id in the £ and an increase of 1-16 of a penny in the Conversion Loan No. 1 Account. The additional charge will amount to 26/- on a property valued at £lOOO, and is estimated to bring in approximately a further £470 over the whole of the borough rating area. “Several unavoidable increases in expenditure have to be provided for this year and there seems no alternative to an increase on the rates to balance the accounts," stated the financial report in the provisional estimates given by the Town Clerk (Mr P. G. Shave,. “Expenditure in flood reconstruction work (exclusive of staff wages) is estimated at £4OO. Increases in wages consequent upon the recent amendment to the Stabilisation Regulations are not yet known, but it is estimated that they will average between 10 per cent and 121 per cent on present rates. All increases granted will be retrospective to April 1. 1945, and the sum of £250 has been allowed for these.

“The Catchment Board levy has been increased by approximately £4O and the Harbour Board levy increased by about £72.” continued the report. “Additional estimated expenditure from the General Account is: Flood reconstruction £4OO, increases in . wages £250, increase in Catchment Board levy £4O, proportion of drivers’ licence fees to

Transport Department £3O, increases in grants applied for £3O, approximate increase in Domain Board grant £l6O, horses and stables £23. Total £933. “Items of expenditure last year which are not provided for this financial year total approximately the amount of additional expenditure estimated. There are: Deposit to town hall building fund £2OO, applied to purchase screening plant £3OO, house additions £l5l, fire hose £l5O, election expenses £5O, drill hall account £66. Total £917. “As it is not now possible to pay the increased amount of the Harbour Board levy from the General Account, it is recommended that a ‘particular separate rate’ of Id in the £ be struck. It is also recommended that the rate for the Conversion Loan No. 1 Interest Account be increased by 1-16 of a penny to 5-8 of a penny. In the past this account has been subsidised to the extent of £lOO a year from the Waterworks Maintenance Account.” The provisional estimates were adopted and will come up for confirmation next Council meeting.
