Southampton To Regain Status RUGBY, May 29. Southampton will be the chief port in Britain for shuttling troops from Britain and the Continent to the United States W’hen the Queen Mary, the Queen Elizabeth and French luxury lines dock there in the middle of July for the first time since the start of the war.

Dredging operations are under way to provide an extra seven feet for the 40 feet draught of the giant British liners. Until the middle of July and such time as the British Admiralty declares that all German submarines have been cleared from Atlantic waters liner troopships will dock at Gourock in the Firth of Clyde. Many troops being moved to the United States from the Continent will leave Le Havre in troop and liberty and victory ships.
