FAIRLIE HOME SERVICEMEN

Annual Meeting

There was an attendance of 14 members at the annual meeting of the Fairlie Sub-branch of the Homeservicemen's Association.

Mr A. R. Cuthill (president) in his report, said that although the branch had not been able to hold any social functions, the year had been a sucessful one. The membersnip had steadily increased and it was expected that the branch would be able to hold a reunion in the near future.

Messrs H. B. Tlmmings and H. C. Green of the South Canterbury Executive were present. Mr Tlmmings gave an address in which he outlined the progress the Association had made during its short existence. Officers were elected as follows: President, Mr A. R. Cuthill; vicepresident, Mr G. S. Giddings; secretary and treasurer. Mr V. J. F. Braddick; committee, Messrs D. R. Smith, W. J. Lundie, J. B. Hansen, D. H. Lee, O. Stechman, H. Clarkson, B. Mcßean, L. R. Harvey and A. J. Cuthbertson; delegates to South Canterbury executive, Messrs A. R. Cuthill, G. S. Giddings and V. J. F. Braddick. At the conclusion of the meeting an enjoyable social ■function was held.

Girl Guides

At a meeting of the Girl Guide Committee Miss Marriott and Miss Young, of Timaru, Provincial and District Commissioners respectively, were present. It was agreed that a Brownie Pack be formed in the near future. The following committee was elected: Mrs T. McKenzie (president); Miss E. Braddick (secretary); Mesdames Crichton, Cook, Berney, Joyce, Bain, Cowan, Simmers and McAuley.

Golf

The following is the draw for this week’s medal round: Mrs Carlton v. Miss McKinnon, Miss Breen v. Miss Ruddick, Mrs MacKintosh v. Miss O’Reilly, Mrs J. E. Macdonald v. Mrs Dobson, Mrs Trotter v. Mrs Ryder, Mrs Anniss v. Miss Doyle, Mrs Manaton v. Mrs Clarke. Mrs John Macdonald v. Miss Carlton, Miss M. Fraser v. Miss S. Pettigrew. Mrs Anniss and Miss June Carlton returned the best card in last week's Canadian Foursome.

Victory Gala Committee

At a meeting of the newly formed Victory Gala Committee a hope was expressed that the Fairlie -and county districts would assist in every way to make the final celebration of victory a memorable one for the children of the district. It was unanimously decided to extend an invitation to the R.S.A. and Homeservicemen's Associations to appoint two delegates each to the committee. The following members were appointed to attend to the various sections of the proposed celebrations, each member so appointed to have power to appoint his or her own sub-committee:—Mes-dames McKenzie, Gray and Surridge to approach the School Committee and school teachers in regard to the arranging of a children’s party, fancy dress, decorated bicycles, etc.; Messrs W. Cuthill and D. Campbell, children’s sports meeting; Messrs K. Allan and J. Allan, in conjunction with Miss M. Macdonald, to arrange a darktown Orchestra; Mr T. Guinness, bonfire; decorated floats and cars, Mr T. N. McKenzie. Mr McKenzie offered to supply a pig for a greasy pig event at the sports. It was agreed to approach the Plunket Society in connection with a baby show, also to ask Mr W. L. Brown to assist in the running of a star riding competition. A mock court was suggested and Mr W. B. Trotter is to be asked to take charge. The matter of short concerts for the evenings was discussed, and Mr A. Edward is to be asked to assist. The arranging of a fancy dress*parade was left in the hands of Miss M. Jones and Miss M. O’Reilly. Many other novel suggestions for entertainment were put forward. It was thought the final victory will be a time for thanksgiving as well as rejoicing, and it was agreed that the heads of the various religious bodies be approached to ascertain their views regarding appropriate services.
