Clearing Minefields (Rec. 7.30 p.m.) LONDON, May 30. The War Office disclosed that 98 officers and men have been killed and 26 wounded or blinded so far in the dangerous task of clearing the British coastline of minefields. Approximately 205.000 mines have been cleared, and there are still more than 100,000 buried. Plans for minelaying were made in 1940. but nearly all were lost or outdated. The units which iaid the mines have been split up. Many mines were washed adrift and others were deeply buried by gales. The normal British beach mine contains 251 b of TNT and spreads shrapnel 300 yards. It is a killer at less than 25 yards.
