APPOINTMENT OF ENGINEER

Catchment Board Major G. R. Milward .Selected Major George Robert Milward. M.N.Z.1.E., M.N.Z.1.5., at present of the New Zealand Engineers, and Southland County Engineer since 1935,. was appointed South Canterbury Catchment Board engineer, from 18 applicants, at a salary of £BOO a year, at the meeting of the Board yesterday. Major Milward, who was torn in Dunedin in 1900. is a married man with two children. Educated at the Otago Boys’ High School, he continued his studies at the Otago University. In 1921 he passed the examination for a surveyor’s licence and was admitted to the Surveyors’ Institute in 1924. He passed the Engineers’ Registration Board Examination for Civil Engineers in 1931 and was admitted an associate member of the New Zealand Institution of Engineers in 1931, becoming a full member in 1944. In 1916 Major Milward commenced an apprenticeship with Mr B. B. Couston, a private engineer and surveyor 4 with a large practice in Dunedin. On the completion of his cadetship he was retained bv Mr Couston as an assistant until 1924. In October, 1924, Major Milward joined the staff of the Southland County Council as assistant engineer and was promoted County engineer in 1935. Among works undertaken by Mr Milward was the construction of a 40ft wide drainage channel for the Waimumu Drainage Board. This channel since its construction five years ago had effectively dealt with the flooding of the major portion of Mataura Borough and a part of the county adjoining the borough. He was also responsible for the design and lay-out. of a scheme of drainage in the Waimea district affecting an area of approximately 40.000 acres. The design and supervision of construction of several major concrete bridge jobs have been undertaken by Major Milward, the last one being a 570 ft reinforced concrete structure over the Mataura River near Wyndham. Major Milward was granted leave hy the Southland County Council on March 27. 1942. to enable him to join up with the Armed Forces. He is still serving with the Works Construction Company with headquarters at Christchurch. In February, 1942. he was placed in charge of a section of Engineers at Invercargill with the rank of second-lieutenant and was promoted to lieutenant one month later. He was promoted captain with the appointment of Assistant-Staff Officer, Works, at Christchurch in December, 1942. In April, 1943. he was appointed Staff Officer, Engineers, and to a combined post of officer commanding the 36th Army Troops Company. New Zealand Engineers and Staff Officer. Engineers. Promotion to major was gazetted in September. 1944.
