16-MILE ADVANCE
Mindanao Campaign WASHINGTON, April 25. "The 24th Division on Mindanao with air support swept forward 16 miles on Highway 1 against scattered resistance. We have now reached hill country,” states General MacArthur’s communique. “Our guerrilla forces on Luzon with air support captured Vigan and its adjacent airfield and also Bantay, along the north-west coast. Except for scattered enemy remnants now being mopped up, the entire Ilocossur Province has been cleared. "Medium bombers bombed the Matsuyama aerodrome. Heavy bombers attacked blockade runners in Yulin Harbour, Hainan, sinking a 4000-ton freighter transport, three smaller freighters and 15 barges and probably sank a 1000-ton freighter transport. Air patrols bombed installations near Shanghai, sank a freighter off Hong Kong and left a freighter sinking off Southern Indo-China.
