FIRST DEBATE
Equipment Of Australian Troops (11.20 p.m.) CANBERRA, April 19. The question of equipment for Australian troops in South-west Pacific areas would be the first for discussion when the House of Representatives met on Tuesday. This assurance was given by tire Treasurer (Mr J. B. Chifley) in the absence through indisposition of the Prime Minister, Mr J. Curtin, when
the Opposition unsuccessfully tried to move the suspension of the standing orders for the immediate discussion of the subject. “Information in the hands ol my party is of such a nature that not a moment’s delay can be endured to get an unsatisfactory position Immediately remedied," said the Leader of the County Party, Mr A. W. Fadden. “The postponement of this matter over the week-end may mean the loss of Australian lives." Mr Chifley said Senator Fraser’s report on equipment in the war theatres would not be available to Mr Curtin until late in the afternoon. After a perusal of the report there might be some questions on which the Prime Minister required personal verification. The Government had not the slightest desire to burke any discussion on this matter.
