PROFESSIONALISM IN SPORT

Mr H. H. Fraser’s Advocacy Advocating professionalism in all sports, the newly-elected president of the South Canterbury Council of Sport (Mr H. H. Fraser) told the annual meeting last night that the sooner amateur sports were replaced by professional the better it would be. He knew what had happened in the past; as a youth he had been an amateur athlete and he believed that in the interests of all sports professionalism should be introduced. Mr Fraser’s remarks were occasioned by the resignation of the South Canterbury Amateur Athletic Club from its affiliation to the Council. Mr L. G. Williams, formerly a delegate to the Council from the Club, said that the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association had instructed clubs to discontinue their affiliations to Councils of Sport. Mr Fraser said he did not think that the Amateur Athletic Club was bound to act on the direction of the New Zealand Association. He hoped an amicable approach would be made to the Club to reconsider its decision. The meeting decided to hold over the resignation in the meantime.
