IN OUTSKIRTS OF BREMEN
(Rec. 1 a.m.) LONDON, April 16. Field-Marshal Montgomery's forces in the last 24 hours increased the threat to Bremen and Hamburg. Correspondents report that a British Division is fighting SS Troops in Bremen's city defences, two miles from the heart of the port. British armour attacking from the Rethem bridgehead on a 10-mile front reached Walsrode. Canadians and Poles have closed up to the North Sea over a wide area of the North Holland coast. The Ems Estuary has been reached north of Winschoten. Reconnaissance units are thrusting out in all d’rections of North-eastern Holland. The Associated Press correspondent says that the battle for North-east Holland has ended except for clearing odd pockets. The Canadians are now less than 10 miles from Oldenburg. A British division fighting in the woods north of Cloppenburg is also closing in on the town. The United States Third Army cleared Neustadt, 15 miles south-east of Jena.
