GOLF EASTER TOURNAMENT
Good Scores Recorded
The Highfleld course was in splendid condition at the week-end for the annual tournament sponsored by the Gleniti Club. On Saturday the entries were not as good as usual, and yesterday a light rain in the morning kept a number of players away. A medal foursome was played on Saturday morning and in the afternoon a fourball bogey. Two medal rounds occupied yesterday. M. T. Houlihan and M. P. Watson played sound golf in the medal foursome to win with a net 73, which was four strokes better than the runnersup, F. Comer and W. Jones. In the afternoon the ‘’Colonel'’ was hit to leg, no fewer than five pairs beating the bogey of the course. E. G. Kerr and C. G. Burning, five up, won on a count back from B. J. Forrest and H. G. Scott. The winners were two up at the turn and won Plantation. Midway and the Gap on the homeward journey. Scores: Medal foursome —M. T. Houlihan and M. P. Watson 81-8-73; F. Comer and W. Jones 100-23-77; D. Scott and B. Wallace 92-12-80; W. Rodger and R. Voice .104-24-80. Fourball bogey—E. G. Kerr and C. G. Burning 5. up, B. J. Forrest and H. G. Scott 5 up. D. G. Scott and B. E. Wallace 4 up. M. T. Houlihan and M. P. Watson 3 up, G. Sumpter and S. D. Mason 2 up. With two rounds of 79 and 78 respectively, G. E. Sumpter won the gross medal aggregate yesterday. He also had the best net score, 70, in the afternoon, and was second in the net aggregate. With overnight rain, the course was slower than on Saturday, and Sumpter's win was a meritorious performance. A net 66, six strokes below par, by F. Comer in the morning medal spread-eagled the field. A reduction of two in his handicap for the afternoon round did not prevent him from winning the net aggregate. D. J. Scott played well in the morning to record a net 69, which was five strokes better than his afternoon round, for which his handicap had been reduced by one. After apologising for the absence of the president of the Gleniti Club, Mr H. Ward, the secretary, Mr H. L. Warsaw, thanked the players for their support of the tournament. An early Easter and counter-attractions had militated against a large entry, but nevertheless, the tournament had been
a successful one. The Timaru Club was to be congratulated on the excellent state of the course. Thanks to Mr Warsaw for his supervision of the tournament was expressed by the club captain of the Timaru Club, Mr S. D. Mason. Results: Morning medal—F. Comer 87-21-66, D. J. Scott 79-10-69, G.
