Clarence Grimmett Had Great Record

<7.0 p.m.) ADELAIDE. April 1. Clarence Grimmett, aged 52, has announced his retirement from first class cricket. He has been the outstanding howler in Australian Sheffield Shield and test matches for the last 20 years.

Grimmett learned his cricket at the Mount Cook School, Wellington, New Zealand. He was originally a fast bowler, but was persuaded to use spin by J. Hempieman and two brothers named Harris.

Coming to Australia Grimmett played in New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia before gaining selection for an Australian test side. His

greatest test triumph was in his first game in Sydney In March, 1925, when he took five wickets for 45 runs and six for 37 —a first appearance record. He was particularly successful on English wickets.

Grimmett's bowling figures in first class cricket, were 464 wickets in Sheffield Shield matches, 105 in Tests against England, 77 against South Af"'”a and 33 against West Indies. TI constitutes a record for the number of wickets in Test games. In all games for South Australia Grimmett took 587 wickets.
