SPECTACULAR FEAT
Crossing The Rhine (Rec. 6.30 p.m.) LONDON, Mar. 31. One of the most spectacular feats o fighting in Europe since the landin of the Allies on the Normandy beaehe has been the triumphant, success o men of the Royal Engineers in pro viding ferries and bridges across th Rhine to back up Field-Marshal Mont gomery's assault troops. Within a few hours of the first infantry crossings transport ferries were carrying supplies across the river and only 21 hours after the crossing the first bridge had been completed and troops and supplies were pouring over. More than 10,000 sappers were direct lv emploved and more than 100 lorries were used to bring up 53.00 feet of bridging. While our armie were still traintag in England plan were made and rehearsals carried ou for bridging the Rhine. Long before the first assault troop went over, a preliminary reconnaissanc had been carried out on the site, sup plies brought forward to convenien dumos and everything made ready t ensure that the infantry received th fullest possible support from sapper: During the first night 500 tanks crosse the river to the bridgehead.
