SWIMMING SOUTH END CLUB

Keen Competition At Carnival O’Rourke Wins 220 Yards Championship Exciting finishes, many races being won by a touch, were a feature of the annual carnival conducted by the South End Swimming Club at the Centurv Baths last night. In spite of the showers which fell there was a large attendance of spectators and their enthusiasm in attending was more than justified by the high standard displayed by the competitors. Under the control of Mr F. Heise, president of the Club, and his committee, who were assisted by officials of the South Canterbury Swimming Centre, the programme of 25 events was completed in good time. Mr Heise took the opportunity to thank the competitors and spectators for thensupport and the club and Centre officials who had assisted in the success of the carnival.

In the 220 yards South Canterbury men's freestyle championship D. O’Rourke gained a lead of about seven yards in the first 50 yards. He maintained this advantage till the last 20 yards when he had no difficulty in staving off a challenge by N. Belcher, to win in 3min 2sec. Miss A. Smith had no competition in the South Canterbury women's 100 yards backstroke championship, and, accompanied by a male swimmer, she completed the distance in 32sec, winning well-merited applause by her sportsmanlike gesture.
