LOCAL GOVERNMENT
Comprehensive Inquiry (N.Z.P.A.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 30. The comprehensive inquiry into local government promised by the Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon. W. E. Parry) will start in Wellington on February 20, when the Select Committee of 14 members of Parliament appointed last session will hear evidence of a national character relating to local government finance and taxation, including hospital rating and election procedure. Mr R. McKeen. the member for Wellington South, and Chairman of Committees of the House of Representatives, will be chairman. Wellington sittings are expected to last a fortnight, as evidence will be tendered by all national organisations concerned with local government. The committee will then divide, one section hearing evidence in a number of North Island centres, and the other carrying out an equally comprehensive itinerary in the South Island. It is hoped thus to expedite the committee’s report to the Minister, enabling him to present it at the next session. Details of the itinerary outside Wellington are being prepared.
