WINCHESTER AIRMAN
Skill As Navigator Earns D.F.C. (N.Z.P.A.) WELLINGTON. Jan. 31. Warrant Officer Ronald John Hawke, of Winchester, is described in the citation of the recent award to him of the Distinguished Flying Cross as “a navigator of outstanding skill and efficiency, who has contributed largely to the success achieved by his pilot." The citation says that in April. 1944. his aircraft was detailed to attack an important target. “Anti-aircraft fire was very intense,” it continues, “and the rudder of his aircraft was shot away. In spite of the resultant difficulties a safe landing was made. He has also participated in many attacks against road and rail transport with success. During a daylight attack against train concentrations in August. 1944, several ammunition and petrol trains were hit by bombs and cannon fire. Warrant Officer Hawke’s operational record is an excellent one, and he has made a valuable contribution to his squadron’s achievements.” An old boy of the Temuka District High School. Warrant Officer Hawke is 28 years of age. His mother is Mrs N. Hawke, of Winchester.
